Visionary Approach
We believe that lack of vision is one of the causes of chronic poverty. Unfortunately, this is not often effectively addressed in development programmes. We also believe that people themselves must decide what they want and realize the need for change.
Through the Girls' School co-curriculum program, URDT encourages the students – and their families – to develop a clear vision of their desired future and then to take specific action steps to achieve that vision. Thus, the vision of prosperity becomes the compelling force for development instead of the desire to eradicate poverty, inspired by what one wants to get rid of.
Although this may seem a subtle distinction, on a deeper level the difference in orientation is quite dramatic. The "eradication" orientation focuses on reacting to a never-ending supply of negative problems, which can lead to a feeling of powerlessness and discouragement. The "creative" orientation focuses on creating a positive outcome, thus fostering innovation, leadership and a sense of one's ability to achieve.
