URDT's focus on "Gender and Technology" ensures that women and girls are especially encouraged to participate in trainings and become adept at using these technologies.
Students can receive training in the construction, use and repair of the following technologies:
- Solar electricity (lighting, heating)
- Solar drying
- Improved and energy-saving stoves
- Charcoal refrigerators
- Ventilated Improved Pit latrines
- Battery charging
- Biogas
- Conversion of wastes
- Bicycle assembling and repair
- Water harvesting
- Rope and washer pumps
- Solar Electricity Training Center
Appropriate Technologies
URDT provides demonstration and training in appropriate technologies on the URDT campus. These technologies promote sustainable development that does not harm the environment.
Solar Electricity Training Center
URDT's Solar Electricity Training Center provides training to technicians on collecting and storing solar energy, electrical wire patterns, switches, plug connections, wiring and installation. URDT has trained solar electricians sponsored by the Ministry of Energy and the Ugandan Rural Electricity Association.
Building Local Capacity
Use of appropriate technologies spreads as URDT students introduce the technologies into their own families and communities.
Girls' School Students Train their Parents
During the URDT Girls' School "Gender & Technology Week," 210 girls received
trainings in appropriate technologies. In turn, the students trained their
parents. Technologies such as drying racks, solar driers and low-cost bathrooms
have been adopted by many of these households.
Community-Based Technicians Train Villagers
URDT has trained dozens of Community-Based Technicians in the construction,
maintenance and use of various technologies. These CBTs then provide technical
services at the village level to those who want to acquire the technologies or
need repairs. This creates a self-reliant community with regard to simple
appropriate technologies.
